Understanding Regional Urology Landscape - Local Landscape of Urology

It is quite important to understand the local landscape in a particular area of Urology, and having access to a patient demographic map can be vital to your success. Once you have analyzed the local geography of Urology in a particular area, you will be better able to find Urology practices in your locale that will meet your specific needs.

UrologyThere are some parts of the country where the Urology practice is growing at a higher rate than others. It would be wise to investigate the local geography of Urology practices in these areas. Not only will you be able to make a good educated decision about which practices to work with, but it will also allow you to avoid practices that are most likely to be experiencing a slow growth, and therefore offering the lowest prices on routine procedures.
The regional areas of Urology that I work with usually have very few geographically isolated areas. I may even be able to find practices that provide services in areas where I live and work.

Before doing this research, I take a step back and ask myself what my region of Urology is like. Is it mainly rural or is it mostly urban? What is the landscape like, how far does distance take me from my place of work, and how busy is the office?

My areas of interest in a surgical specialty are not always the same as others'. They can vary tremendously from coast to coast. In the Southwest the surgeries I work with are more often elective, while they used to be reserved for those who are living near a major city. There is still a lot of variation between the surgical specialties of a geographic area, but it is changing slowly.

After determining my geographic area of interest, I look at the United States to see which regions of Urology has the highest and lowest growth rate. This information is invaluable to determine the local landscape of Urology in any given region.

The rural areas tend to have a very high volume of elective surgery patients, while the urban areas experience growth of patients from commercial offices, as well as surgeons who have chosen to specialize in rural and/or underserved areas. These areas are becoming more defined and the regional landscape of Urology is becoming more defined as each one of these regional variations becomes the focus of study and development.

While the geographic area is the most important component of a regional or generalist practice of Urology, the utilization of a bi- and multi-specialty approach to treatment will make a world of difference to the patients who you serve. It is also imperative that a surgeon be willing to accept new techniques and explore alternative treatments, when working in a regional practice of Urology.

While most practitioners of Urology will work with a wide array of patients who are under their care and supervision, I strongly recommend that a surgical specialty go a step further and offer a full range of services in order to cover every possible contingency in the available field of Urology. For example, you may wish to expand your offerings of procedures beyond a simple procedure of complete hysterectomy.

If you do not have this flexibility and realize that there is a great need for you to grow your practice into a regional Urology practice, it is never too late to get involved with growing a specialized clinic that offers many of the same procedures that a larger medical office might offer. Regional offers you a chance to earn new clients through referrals and also provides a way to broaden your scope of care. These additional specialty services should include a full range of non-surgical procedures and a full range of surgery.

Finally, you will want to use your current regional clinics as a learning tool in order to train future surgeons of Urology. This can be accomplished by offering to coach them on basic procedures and educate them on the latest developments in Urology. Not only will you be able to utilize their procedures and knowledge, but you will also be able to show them how they can leverage their knowledge into employment as a surgeon in a larger region of Urology.

It is absolutely essential to understand the local landscape in a surgical specialty, and then use the landscape to help you expand and learn new techniques and methods. Once you have explored the local landscape in the surgical specialty of Urology, you are now ready to start applying and discovering the procedures that are truly suited to your regional needs.
